Illinois Lottery Introduction

The Illinois Lottery is a US state lottery that is operated by Camelot Illinois and available across the state of IL. The owners and operators of this lottery are the same ones behind the UK National Lottery, the Thunderball, and the UK operation of EuroMillions. They are one of the biggest lottery organisations in the world and have a wealth of experience in this sector.

The Illinois Lottery was founded before the UK Lotto, with the first draw taking place back in 1974. At the time, lotteries were only legal in the Midwest and Northeast United States, and the laws that would later create lotteries like Mega Millions, Powerball, and Florida Lotto had yet to be passed. As a result, Illinois Lottery was one of the biggest lotteries in the US and it has held onto that reputation ever since.

How to Play Illinois Lottery

The Illinois Lottery costs just $1 to play, with tickets consisting of 6 number chosen from a possible 52. The draw takes place three times a week, on Monday, Thursday and Saturday, jackpot winners are required to choose between an annuity and a cash option, and Illinois based players can also choose to take part in one of several other lottery games, including the Lotto Extra Shot, which costs $2 to play and gives players a few extra options.

The current format of the Illinois Lottery has existed since 1998, and there were a number of differences prior to then, including the fact that the $1 fee used to give the player two chances (much like the current format of the New York Lottery).

Jackpots and Records

There is a minimum jackpot of $2 million on the Illinois Lottery, and this rolls over into the next draw if there are no jackpot winners. The highest the jackpot has ever been was $70 million, a staggering sum of money for a regional lottery.

Winning Odds of Illinois Lottery

The Illinois Lottery odds are very favourable and have been throughout its history, despite changing a few times. The current odds for a jackpot win are 1 in 20,358,520, while the odds for winning the smallest prize (paid to players who get three main numbers) are 1 in 67.
