El Gordo Introduction

The El Gordo is a Spanish lottery that attracts a wealth of interest from players all over the world. El Gordo means the “Fat One” or the “Big One” and the full name of this lottery is El Gordo de la Primitiva, or “the Fat One of the Primitive Lottery”.

The name “El Gordo” is also used to refer to the grand prize in the Spanish Christmas Lottery, but in this case we’re referring to the El Gordo de la Primitiva, which is a weekly lottery.

How to Play El Gordo

El Gordo de la Primitiva is drawn every Sunday and players need to be at least 18 years of age to play. To play El Gordo you need to choose a total of 5 numbers from between 1 and 54 and a bonus number from between 0 and 9. In Spain it is possible to purchase many different number combinations and to create a complex system much like the MegaSena, but many players prefer to stick with the traditional lottery format and this is also what you will find on the Multilotto website.

Jackpots and Records

The El Gordo has a guaranteed jackpot of €5 million, and if this is not won then half of the money will be used to bolster additional prizes and the rest will go towards a rollover. The jackpot is paid to the player or players who match all 6 numbers, and the smallest prize is paid to players who match 2 main numbers.

Winning Odds of El Gordo

The odds of winning the El Gordo jackpot are 1 in 31 million (1 in 31,625,100 to be precise) and the odds of winning the smallest prize are 1 in 19. This makes it a very accessible lottery across the board, which is why El Gordo has proved so popular over the years.
